Gower Family History

I am in the process of re-designing my web site and therefore not all the links are currently working.

My main aim in creating this site is to publish my family tree with the hope that others interested in the Gower Family might be able to fill in some of the gaps in my Family History.

The source of the name Gower is in some doubt. The Oxford dictionary of English names lists Gower as being or Norman origin, having been changed at some time after the Conquest from its original spelling (derived from Goelle, an area in France north of Paris; someone from there was referred to as a Gohiere ). Various alternate spellings are Guhyer, le Goher, and le Guher. The only difficulty with this origin is that there are two Gowers listed as being on the English side in 1066! One of the earliest with this spelling was John Gower, the medieval poet and friend of Chaucer. Some sources have him as being from modern day Kent, others from Wales.

On the Links page I have listed all the other Gower sites I have come across.

If you believe that you have a connection to my family tree please get in touch and leave a message in my Guestbook or my Message Board.

I look forward to hearing from you

James Gower
